MultiHeritage 2024: Portugal is shaping the future of European heritage education

The second in-person meeting of the MultiHeritage 2024 project partners, a key part of the European KreativEU alliance, took place in the Portuguese city of Tomar from May 12 to 14, 2025. The project aims to create an innovative joint master's degree program focused on cultural heritage, its protection, interpretation, and sustainable development.
The meeting was hosted by the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar (IPT), which prepared not only the working sessions but also an accompanying thematic program. The participants traveled to nearby Porto, where they attended lectures linking winemaking with history, culture, and monuments – a prime example of how cultural heritage can be perceived in all its breadth and depth.
The working sessions themselves took place at the premises of IPT Tomar. The current development of work packages WP2 and WP3, which focus on curriculum design, the structure of individual subjects, and the process of international accreditation of the program, was discussed. An important point of the program was also the vote on the new project logo, which was designed and implemented by IPT students – proof that MultiHeritage is based on the active participation of the younger generation.
The team from the University of South Bohemia, consisting of dr. Karvánková, dr. Blažek, and dr. Voříšek, played an active role in the negotiations and contributed to shaping the specific form of the future study program. The intensive working days were concluded with a ceremonial event – the graduation of the first-year students of IPT Tomar, which symbolically connected academic tradition with the vision of European cooperation.
The MultiHeritage project shows that cultural heritage is not only the past, but also an inspiration for the future – and that education can be a bridge between generations, nations and disciplines.
